***As a formation of power and government that subjects subaltern 
populations to premature death, necropolitics operates through 
displacing and disaffiliating these populations from social networks and 
community bonds, or through what Orlando Patterson has called ‘social 
death’. This conversation invites four authors to scrutinize the 
necropolitics of social death through decolonial, feminist, queer and 
trans perspectives. Drawing on recently published monographs, they will 
discuss how social death forms part of current projects of remaking the 
social - as well as how it is contested through resistant practices of 
solidarity, commoning and care.*

*Fazila Bhimji *received her PhD from the University of California, Los 
Angeles. She worked for several years at the University of Central 
Lancashire, UK. She is the author of Border Regimes, Racialisation 
Processes and Resistance in Germany (Palgrave-Macmillan 2020).

*Prof. Dr. Encarnación Gutiérrez-Rodríguez* is Professor of Sociology at 
Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, collaborating closely with migrant 
and refugee organizations on knowledge transfer around asylum, 
migration, and conviviality. Her current research addresses decolonial 
mourning, creolising conviviality, institutional racism, and affect in 
higher education and human rights.

*Dr. Silvia Posocco *is a social anthropologist with interdisciplinary 
research interests in gender and sexuality studies and violence, 
conflict and genocide studies. She has studied insurgent movements in 
Guatemala, the archives of transnational adoption across sites and 
temporalities, and most recently, forensic archives, biodata worlds and 
futures.

*Aslı Zengin *is an Associate Professor in the Department of Women’s, 
Gender and Sexuality Studies at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. Her 
research lies at the intersection of ethnography of queer and trans 
lives and deaths; medico-legal regimes of sex, gender and sexuality; 
critical studies of violence and sovereignty; as well as transnational 
aspects of LGBTQ movements in the Middle East with a special focus on 
Turkey. She is also a queer feminist activist.
