[News] Book and Exhibition Project "Atlas of Reproduction – Babies, Borders, Geopolitics"

Dear fellow geographers,

It is a huge pleasure for me, on behalf of the entire team, to invite you to the opening of our exhibition "Atlas of Reproduction<https://www.atlas-der-reproduktion.ch/en>", at the Kornhausforum in Bern, as well as to the many other events that will be taking place.
Our research group has spent the past few years working on this exhibition, developing new forms of embodied and engaged science communication in close collaboration with artists, filmmakers, photographers and designers. Thanks to generous funding from the SNSF Agora and many others, we were able to develop the exhibition and publish a book of the same name for a wider audience. This book contains essays based on our research, as well as photographs and artistic maps.

Through the exhibition and the accompanying book, we aim to facilitate more nuanced discussions on reproductive rights, which are often presented in a polarised manner in the media. We also aim to showcase innovative ways of engaging with society and specific social groups by combining geographic research, art, design, and public engagement. The book and exhibition were massive collective efforts involving many people from mLAB, the Institute of Geography in Bern, the BHF, the HKB Institute of Design Research, activism, politics, and culture.

You are warmly invited to the vernissage, and are welcome to visit the exhibition, attend some of the events, purchase the book, order it for your library, bring your students or pupils to the exhibition (we offer specific tours for schools!), and like our posts on the exhibition on social media. The exhibition maps the connections between geopolitics and the intimate decisions made in bedrooms, delivery rooms and hospitals. It explores decisions such as whether and how to fulfil the desire to have children – for example, through egg donation or surrogacy – whether to adopt a child or to place a child up for adoption, as well as issues relating to contraception, family planning, abortion and reproductive self-determination. The atlas illustrates how national and global political frameworks shape personal reproductive experiences and decisions. It is not intended to provide a comprehensive overview of reproductive inequalities worldwide. Instead, drawing on eight case studies, it offers fragmentary insights into the lived realities of reproductive inequalities and highlights their spatial and transnational connections. Each installation comprises a thematic map, an artistic work and an accompanying text.

The artistic installations were created in collaboration between artists and researchers from the Social and Cultural Geography Group<https://www.geography.unibe.ch/research/social_and_cultural_geography/index_eng.html> at the University of Bern. The exhibition was developed by the mLAB<https://mlab.unibe.ch/> at the University of Bern's Institute of Geography – an experimental laboratory that fosters dialogue by bringing together science and art. It was realised in collaboration with the Institute of Design Research<https://www.hkb.bfh.ch/en/research/institutes/institute-of-design-research/> at the Bern Academy of the Arts (HKB). Based on many years of research, the ‘Atlas of Reproduction’ encourages nuanced discussion of issues surrounding reproductive justice.
