The Faculty of Natural Sciences III, Institute of Geosciences and
Geography, at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg is seeking a
full-time (100%) (part time is possible)
*Research Associate (m-f-d) for a fixed term of 3 years starting
01.10.2025. *
Remuneration will be determined based on job duties and responsibilities
and will be aligned with the fulfilment of listed personal requirements,
up to pay grade E13 under the TV-L (Tarifvertrag für den Öffentlichen
Dienst der Länder – 'German Public Service Pay Agreement for the Federal
States').
The ERC Synergy project The Cultures of the Cryosphere. Infrastructures,
Politics and Futures of Artificial Cooling (CultCryo) investigates the
cultural preconditions and consequences of the use of artificial cold.
With aglobally networked system of cold storage facilities, nitrogen
tanks, cold chains, and air-conditioned spaces, the global use of
cooling and freezing technologies enables modern life on both biological
and social levels – for example, in the areas of food supply, medicine,
air conditioning, and data processing. Despite its far-reaching
socio-ecological impacts, the enormously energy-intensive planetary
"cryosphere" has not yet been systematically researched. The
interdisciplinary research project consists of several international
research groups working in close cooperation. For more information,

*Job Responsibilities:*
* Developing and implementing the “Atlas of the Cryosphere”; an
interactive online platform that promotes the research of the
CultCryo project
* Mapping and visualising geographies of artificial cooling
* Closely cooperating with international research teams and project
partners in the fields of philosophy, social science, urban studies,
history, geography, and computer science
*Requirements*:
* Completed scientific university degree (Master’s degree) in
geography, anthropology, design or related fields • PhD of advantage
but not required
* Very good English skills (C1 or higher) are required, knowledge of
German is desirable
* Experiences in geovisualization (GIS, digital mapping, data
management, design)
* Interest in science communication and transfer
* Ability to work in a team
