Dear all,

we are looking forward to receiving theoretical and empirical paper
submissions for our Lightning Session at the German Congress of
Geography (September 19-23, 2023) on the topic: "Participation in
qualitative geography: Perspectives on social responsibility in research
partnerships".

Participatory research (also referred to as action research) describes
the inclusion of non-scientific actors in the research process. We would
like to take the current popularity of participatory approaches in
qualitative geography as an opportunity to ask critically and
reflexively about social responsibilities: What forms of knowledge
co-production have been tried out and what opportunities and challenges
can be derived from them? How can participation overcome the
hierarchical divide between researcher and participant in the research
process? How can it be ensured that participatory research does not only
legitimize research in certain life worlds? How can it lead to social
change to fulfill the self-formulated activist claim?

We are looking forward to short presentations in German and English that
contribute to the joint discussion and reflection on participatory
research in human geography. The planned lightning session aims to
illuminate the field of participatory research from research-ethical,
-practical and/or methodological perspectives.

More info on the session and submission of abstracts (in German or
English) by March 13, 2023, via the following link:

Best,
