Please join us for THE INSPIRED DISCIPLINE, an mLAB online symposium on geography's search for new mediums and artistic methods, on March 25-26 via Zoom.

We invite students, researchers, and everyone interested to explore and discuss new ways of doing geography and communicating research. We start with IMPULSES on creative geographies by Harriet Hawkins (professor of Geography at Royal Holloway, University of London) and Hannah Hurtzig (theatre-maker/Mobile Academy Berlin) on the staging of knowledge and non-knowledge. On the second day, short public presentations will be followed by workshops on radical MAPS by Philippe Rekacewicz (experimental cartographer, information designer and geographer, University of Helsinki), COMICS as research output with Juliet Fall (professor of geography at the Université de Genève) and filmic SCENOGRAPHY with Constanze Fischbeck (filmmaker, stage designer and professor of scenography at Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design). In a final roundtable discussion we will discussb with all participants and Stefan Brönnimann (professor for Climatology, University of Bern) the FUTURES of creative practices in academic research and teaching.

CONCEPT
Geography, and other academic disciplines, are increasingly seeking dialogue with the arts which has led some to speak of a creative turn in recent years. In the process, geographers have begun to experiment with creative research practices that respond to critique concerning the limits of representing geographical research exclusively or mainly through academic texts, as well as narrow research methodologies. This symposium is an invitation to discuss, reflect and learn how aesthetic experiences impact he communication and perception of scientific content, and to explore original ways of doing and representing geographies. In particular, we focus on new multi-sensory and affectual methods as well as collaborative methodologies which can help us conduct research differently, generate distinct kinds of knowledge, and may provide the basis for new epistemologies.

In the lectures, workshops and final discussion, we will explore promising new mediums and artistic methods for research and teaching. We specifically ask: How can an engagement with the arts enrich ways of doing geography in concrete and practical ways? To what extent can participatory and collaborative research change the relationship between academic geography and the wider public? And how can art contribute to creating other qualities and forms of knowledge?
