Lockdown and the Intimate

AAG Annual Meeting 2021

Organizers: Sunčana Laketa (University of Neuchatel), Sara Fregonese (University of Birmingham) and Banu Gökariksel (University of North Carolina)

The lockdown imposed upon cities, regions, and states as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic is an unprecedented spatial intervention, both in terms of its scale and scope. Be it as a result of terrorism, natural disaster, or pandemic, lockdown is more than an intervention in physical space and infrastructure. It is also a security intervention that relies on and mobilizes the site of the intimate along different and often unequal geographies – from managing behaviour through social distancing to constructing embodied geographies of threat and vulnerability. This session draws attention to how the intimacies of lockdown are “felt, patterned, and practiced in everyday life” (Pain 2009: 467) through bodies, experiences, and subjectivities. How does the spatial politics of lockdown/confinement mobilize the site of the intimate? Moreover, how does the site of the intimate help forge possibilities and places of counter-narratives of solidarity, of shared vulnerabilities and care in contrast to renewed militarization, rising authoritarianism and the expanding spatialities of the carceral in everyday life? The intimate entanglements of lockdown are explored through a range of themes, including but not limited to:

  * Dissecting scales and spatial politics of lockdown: managing space – from personal and domestic space to governing international borders
  *   Racialized vulnerability and threat
  * Embodied confinement: class, age, gender and ethnicity in the experience of threat and vulnerability
  * Affective, emotional, and sensorial landscapes of lockdown
  * Well-being and care during lockdown
  *   Everyday life under lockdown
  *   Historical geographies of lockdown
  * Intimate geographies of the “new normal” in the post-Covid city

If you would like to participate in the virtual session, please send your 250-word abstracts to suncana.laketa at unine.ch<mailto:suncana.laketa at unine.ch>, S.Fregonese at bham.ac.uk<mailto:S.Fregonese at bham.ac.uk>, and banug at email.unc.edu<mailto:banug at email.unc.edu> by October 25. We will notify acceptance by early the following week.
