Liebe Sybille, liebe Anke,

Sybille

Liebe Alle,

Kia ora Gender and Geography Commission Steering Committee
{I apologise for the length of this email, but please read and respond asap.)
I hope you and your loved ones are well. It is deeply concerning watching and hearing reports about how different countries are handling the global pandemic. Because of Covid, I have delayed reaching out to you. There are, however, three things that need our attention. These are: 1) a new Chair of the Commission; 2) Vacancies in our Steering Committee; and 3) a 2 – 3 page summary of Commission plans.
1: New Chair
My term as Chair comes to an end in August of this year. We need to elect a new one. To remind you, I have served one term as Chair and one term as Steering Committee member. As much as I love this role, it is time for someone else to lead the Commission.
In the past, we have held the view that the Chair could be filled by a past Steering Committee member or someone else who has had close involvement with the Commission’s activities. This is not to be exclusive, rather, our intent is to point out that it would likely be helpful to ensure that whoever was elected Chair has some familiarity with the Commission and involvement with its activities. Election of this individual could either be open or by the Steering Committee. I suggest that this be a Steering Committee election in the way that committees in many contexts, once formed, elect their own leaders.
Please email me by the 31 May if you would like to be the next Chair of the Commission. If there is more than one person, then we will ask for people to share vision statements and put it to a Steering Committee vote.
2: Steering Committee members
Here is the current membership of our Steering Committee.

Regulations regarding the composition of Steering Committees are found here:
https://igu-online.org/organization/statutes/
I quote the relevant section:
‘A Commission shall consist of a Chair and a Steering Committee normally consisting of not more than ten other members, each of whom shall serve for approximately four years and be eligible for reappointment for a second term of similar length. From among its steering committee members a Commission may designate, if it wishes, a Vice-Chair and a Secretary. Normally, there shall not be more than one member from any one adhering country. The Chair shall normally be appointed by the General Assembly; the list of steering committee members shall be approved by the Executive Committee. No person shall be a member of the steering committee of more than one Commission. The Commission may co-opt an appropriate number of members. In the event of a vacancy in the chair occurring between General Assemblies, a new chair shall be appointed by the Executive Committee having regard to the recommendation of the members of the Commission Steering Committee. Vacancies in the Steering Committee of a Commission occurring after the approval of the list by the Executive Committee may be filled by resolution of the Commission.’
And:
‘J. The maximum term of service on a Commission for a chair or steering committee member in any capacity shall be twelve years.’
So my question is, who would like to stay on and who would like to leave the Steering Committee?
To fill Steering Committee vacancies, I have drafted an email to attract new members.
<start>
The IGU Gender and Geography Commission would like to invite self-nominations for those interested in joining the Steering Committee for the period August 2020 to July 2024. Please see our webpage for Commission activity and details (https://igugender.wixsite.com/igugender)

(d) CV
Please email your nominations (in MS Word) to Lynda Johnston, at lynda.johnston at waikato.ac.nz<mailto:lynda.johnston at waikato.ac.nz> by Friday 26 June 2020. All nominations will be considered and selected by members of the current steering group.
<end>
I will send this email when I have heard back from you (please respond asap) all regarding your commitment to serve a 2nd or 3rd term.
3: Research Plan
I received an email from R.B. Singh, Secretary General: International Geographical Union (IGU), asking for a Research Plan. The details are:
‘Regarding restructuring of the commission and change of chair of the commissions and Task Force during 2020-24,
I request you to submit two to three pages Research plan for 2020-24 before 31st May 2020 for discussion by IGU EC in order to decide continuation for 2020-24 incorporating:
i. Present committee and proposed committee for 2020-24.
ii. Present objectives of the commission and proposed objectives for 2020-24,
iii. Five major list of achievements for 2016-20 and five major activities to be undertaken during 2020-24.’
We will not have new SC members in place, but I shall outline our process in the plan. I’m drafting our research plan now and will distribute to you asap.
Thank you all and take care,
Lynda
